Hans started martial arts in 1973 when he was only 12 years old. His first lessons were in Jiu-Jitsu and he later joined the Belgian army in 1979 and became a paratrooper. In the army he started training boxing and kickboxing and in 1996 met Sifu Dan Inosanto and went on to train under one of his Instructors, Salem Assli.
