When it comes to buying an eyebrow trimmer, most brow experts look for options that will provide plenty of control and precision. Perhaps that’s why Beeler prefers to stick with scissors. “I would tend to shy away from razors and electric trimmers, which can remove a lot of hair quickly and with little to no user control,” he says. Though some people might like the ease and speed of a razor, it’s important to do a patch test before you touch brows. Without the right brow know-how, you can wind up removing too much hair.

Of course, not all eyebrow trimmers are created equal. “You also want one that is ergonomically efficient, to allow a steady hand when trimming,” Luong adds. “You do not want to slip and accidentally trim too much.”

Using scissors as an eyebrow trimmer might seem intimidating—but Beeler says that with the right instructions, it’s a fairly easy process. Use a spoolie to brush through your brows in an upward motion, starting from the inner corner and working your way to the end of the brow. “Following the shape of your natural brow, trim the excess hair that is above your natural brow line, using the spoolie as a guide to avoid trimming too much,” he says.

How short should you trim your eyebrows? Luong tells her clients to stay one to two millimeters away from the actual brow. “You never want to trim into the body of the brow,” she says, ”just the hairs sticking out.”

Ultimately, it depends. While some people will seldom need to trim their brows, others might need to do so every few weeks. According to Luong, looking out for a few visual cues will help you set the proper cadence. “A telltale sign would be the hairs sticking out from the brow, the brows looking uneven, or even an ‘Oscar the Grouch’ look,” she says.

If you do need to trim your brows often, Luong recommends consulting with a professional on best practices. “It’s helpful to have a brow specialist or artist to help point out your problem areas, like sparse spots or mismatched lengths,” she explains. “So, if you do need to trim at home, you know where you should avoid trimming and tweezing.”
